3 Steps 👟 Every CEO Needs to Go From Controller to Coach

The most effective leaders aren’t the ones with all the answers — they’re the ones who create the conditions for others to find them

A recent article by Russell Reynolds Associates explores a powerful shift in leadership mindset: from decision-maker to enabler. This isn’t just a semantic change — it’s a strategic imperative

Here’s why it matters:

🔄 The pace of change has outgrown hierarchy

Markets no longer move quarterly — they shift hourly. Frontline teams often spot trends before the C-suite does. Leaders must decentralize decision-making to stay responsive.

🧠 Expertise is distributed, not concentrated

The best insights come from diverse voices across functions & geographies. Leaders must amplify those voices, not override them

💡 Transformation thrives on empowerment

Organizations that enable decision-making at every level move faster, adapt better, & innovate more consistently

But this shift isn’t easy.

For many senior leaders, letting go of control challenges their identity. Some might even argue, if leadership isn’t about having the final say, what is it about?

The answer: orchestration over ownership.

Effective enablers: 1. Restructure leadership teams for agility, not hierarchy 2. Hire and develop leaders who elevate others 3. Map decision flows to eliminate bottlenecks 4. Redefine success as collective impact, not individual brilliance

As someone who coaches executives to maximise their leadership impact, I see this shift as essential. The future belongs to leaders who can scale trust, distribute authority, & accelerate capability

And in a world where leadership effectiveness defines competitive advantage, the question isn’t whether you can afford to let go — it’s whether you can afford not to!
