When Colonel Ron Garan orbited Earth 2,842 times & traveled over 71 million miles in space, he didn’t just gain altitude — he gained perspective 🔭

Inspired ✨ by a recent interview that was featured in Chief Executive Group, Garan shared what he calls the “orbital perspective” — a mindset built on looking skyward, earthward, & forward. It’s a philosophy that transcends space travel & offers profound lessons for business leaders navigating uncertainty, complexity, & transformation

Here are 5 leadership insights that resonated deeply with me:

1. 🔭 Zoom Out, Then Zoom In 🔍

Great leaders maintain dual focus — they see the big picture while staying grounded in the human experience. Strategic foresight must be paired with empathy. It’s not either/or. It’s both

1. 🌍 Sustainability Is Not Optional

From space, it’s clear: the economy depends on society, and society depends on the planet. Garan reminds us that sustainability isn’t a philosophy — it’s reality. Leaders must shift from short-term gains to long-term stewardship

1. 🤝🏼 Collaboration Is the New Competitive Advantage 🏅

The International Space Station was built through global cooperation 🤝🏼. Imagine what we could achieve if we applied the same mindset to solving Earth’s challenges. True leadership is about building bridges 𖣑, not silos

1. 🚀 Act Boldly, Not Just Strategically

Ideas don’t change the world — actions do. Visionary leadership requires courage, not just clarity. As Garan puts it, “We are limited only by our imagination and our will to act.”

1. 🌌 Redefine ‘Home’

Leadership today demands a broader definition of belonging. We are not just citizens of nations or companies — we are stewards of a shared future. Expanding our sense of home expands our capacity to lead with purpose.

As someone who coaches senior leaders through executive transitions, I find Garan’s reflections a timely ⏱️ reminder: the best leaders are those who can see beyond their immediate horizon 🌅 — and act with intention 💫
