Why Tech CxO Hiring Disasters Are So Predictable
We talk a big game about innovation & forward-thinking leadership in the tech world. But the data from the recent Eton Bridge Partners report reveals a landscape that's surprisingly traditional and rigid. It's time for a reality check
Key Insights from the Eton Bridge Partners Ltd CxO Technology Pathways Report 2025:
Age Matters (A Lot): The average age for a tech CxO appointment across Europe is 51.2 years old, indicating a deep reliance on decades of accumulated experience. The pathway to the C-suite is a marathon, not a sprint
The External Edge: A striking 57% of tech CxOs were external appointments, a sharp contrast to other C-suite roles like CFOs (45%) or CEOs (46%). This tilt suggests a continuous hunger for "new blood" & transformative thinking, rather than cultivating internal pipelines
Gender Gap Glaring: Women remain significantly underrepresented, accounting for only one in ten tech leadership appointments (10%). This is even more male-dominated than CFO roles (80% male). Sweden 🇸🇪 led the way with the highest proportion of female hires at 17%, while Germany 🇩🇪 was lowest at 9%
First-Timers Welcome: Nearly half (49%) of tech CxOs were first-time C-suite leaders, suggesting a healthy appetite for elevating emerging talent into top roles. PE-backed businesses, in particular, show a higher proportion of first-time tech CxOs than non-PE-backed
My Key Takeaways
The tech industry is at an inflection point. While we are making strides in some areas (like bringing in first-time leaders), our reliance on a narrow demographic & preference for external hires over internal development in certain areas might be limiting our true potential for innovation and diversity
If we want to truly lead the charge in the digital age, we need to challenge these norms and build more diverse, inclusive, & forward-looking leadership pipelines
📣 Did you know that targeted executive coaching is one of the most effective ways to retain and develop your tech talent? But don't take my word for it. Take it from a Vice President Solution Architecture of a top technology company who faced a challenging role on the back end of an internal promotion and didn’t have great chemistry with his newly appointed C-suite line manager. He described the executive coaching as follows:
💬 “Working with Navid has been a transformative experience in my role. His insights and guidance helped me refine my strategic approach, leading to more effective solution designs and seamless collaboration with cross-functional teams. Navid's ability to break down complex challenges and provide actionable advice has been invaluable to my professional growth. His coaching style is both empowering and results-driven, making a significant impact on my leadership and decision-making skills.”
